NSS Pattam Charter Information.  Spanish Virgin Islands
What are the Spanish Virgin Islands?
The Spanish Virgin Islands are the cruising area in the east side of Puerto Rico. This area encompasses
primarily the islands of Vieques and Culebra, together with dozens of other smaller islands, cays and islets.
These islands are only a few hours by boat from the US Virgin Islands.
The eastern end of Puerto Rico, which is the primary boating area of the Island, is also a cruising ground, and
considered part of this beautiful area.
The official language in these islands is Spanish, but many people also speak English. The islands are a
territory of the USA.

Why should we go there?
This area has a totally different flavor and cultural background than what you have in the Virgin Islands or any
other islands. If you have cruised the other Caribbean islands, this area would be of great interest as the area
is so different than your prior experiences.
This cruising area is a total change of pace, very slow, like going back in time, while at the same time you
have all the modern requirements like US cellular systems.

What is there?
What is a more revealing answer is to tell you what is not there. If you are looking for casinos, night life,
gourmet restaurants, large hotels, lots of development, this is not the place. This is the place where you can
get lost in the slow pace of the past and just enjoy yourself.

How do we get there?
You can start or end your charter in the Spanish Virgin Islands, and also cruise the Virgin Islands. The
preferred route is to start in the US Virgin Islands or the BVI, cruise those areas and then finish your cruise in
the Spanish Virgin Islands. The San Juan airport is only one hour by car from the marinas on the east coast of
Puerto Rico.

If you cruise only the Spanish Virgin Islands you also do not need to have a passport, and there is no checking
back into the United States as you have when you are in the US Virgin Islands.
